Mothers, sisters, aunts, wives, daughters and history makers: that’s women.  In celebration of Women’s History Month, Mountain Home AFB has scheduled multiple events throughout the month of March.

Mountain Home AFB’s Special Observance Committee began the month’s recognition with a cake-cutting ceremony held at the Base Exchange, March 2, 2016, to highlight women of the past who’ve impacted our future. A health fair and self-defense course are scheduled to take place later in the month as part of the celebrations.

“I believe it's always important to celebrate our heritage and highlight the past contributions that women made,” said Staff Sgt. Sylvia Smith, 366th Aerospace Medicine Squadron NCO in charge of Community Health. “Their contributions have laid the foundation for the multitude of improvements [and] innovations women are still making today.”

It’s also important to recognize the contributions women have made to the Air Force and military as a whole, explained Master Sgt. Chole Long, 366th AMDS superintendent.

“Women make up 21% of the force, and our contributions have advanced the Air Force,” Smith said. “I believe that honoring and paying homage matters now and will continue to in the future.”

Both Smith and Long who are on the Special Observance Committee, hope that people are able to gain knowledge and appreciation during this month and the events being held.

“To put it simply, you don’t know where you’re going if you don’t know where you came from,” Long said. “Women’s History Month is a time to appreciate the shoulders we stand upon; many women endured tough times to pave the way for us [and] this time allows for reflection, inspiration, and motivation for us to continue on the successful path that has been set for us.”
