Gunfighters sweep ACC Media Awards with 10 wins

The 366th Fighter Wing Public Affairs office won 10 Air Combat Command media awards in the 2013 annual competition.

The 366th FW website, www.mountainhome.af.mil, was also named the 3rd best website in ACC.

Winning the News Journalism Category was Senior Airman Shane Phipps, with "Airman Sentenced to Confinement, Discharged Following Sexual Assault."

The story started, "Airman Basic Alexander Rowe, 726th Air Control Squadron, was found guilty of forcible sodomy, Aug 16. After a three-day court martial, Rowe was sentenced to two years confinement, demotion from E-4 to E-1, a dishonorable discharge with forfeiture of all pay and allowances and is currently being transferred to Naval consolidated brig, Miramar, Calif."

Placing third in the Sports Journalism Category was Master Sgt. Kevin Wallace, with "BSU Broncos Visit Idaho Base to Learn Combat Saga, Teach Clinic."

The story started, "Kiss my cleats! Indeed, a bold declaration for a child to make when stepping onto a soccer field against a team of college athletes who play in a premier Mountain West Conference university."

Winning the Series Article with nine stories about 366th Security Forces Squadron Defenders was Wallace, with "Gunfighter Defender Series."

The series started, "They're the woman pumping gas at the Shoppette, the man sitting at the Veterans of Foreign Wars, and the Defender in the pristine uniform standing out in the wind and snow, directing traffic through a downed traffic light.

"Heroes ... authors, poets, politicians, musicians and movie writers have all tried to paint the perfect picture of them throughout the years.

"They come in many forms, and all different sexes, races and religions. But if one thing is certain, heroes walk among us every day, and many modestly patrol and defend this very base.

"To whom did you hand your I.D. card to as you entered base this morning?"

Placing second in the Photojournalism Category was Senior Airman Benjamin Sutton, with "RAF JTACs Train at MHAFB."

The story and all photos were captured by Sutton. The story started, "Alone on a hilltop in the mid-day sun, 4,860 miles from home, a few brave men discretely move to a fortified position and prepare to call in close-air support on the enemy position below. Joint Terminal Attack Controllers or Forward Air Controllers from the British Royal Air Force are currently training at Mountain Home AFB."

The runner-up for ACC's Outstanding New Writer was Senior Airman Caitlin Guinazu.

The runner-up for ACC's Military Print Journalist of the Year was Sutton.

Placing third in the Graphic Layout and Design category was Wallace, with "DEFENDERS: A Special 366th Security Forces Squadron Series Celebrating Police Week 2013."
