May 12-16 marks Police week, a national week honoring police forces nationwide.

The 366th Security Forces Squadron hosts a Defender's challenge during the 2014 National Police Week.

The challenges included a five minute warm up of burpees/pull ups, circuit training, a dummy carry, and weapons disassembly/reassembly.

"Being a prior cop, I knew what to expect," said Staff Sgt. Barrett Johnson, 366th Fighter Wing Judge Advocate adverse actions paralegal. "I knew it was going to be tough, but it was a great team building opportunity."

For a fellow paralegal, the anticipation was exhausting.

"In my mind I built it up to be more difficult than it was," said Tech.
Sgt. Andy Mathews, 366th NCO in-charge of military justice. "Everyone was very enthusiastic about it though."

Pulling together and encouraging teammates ensured everyone made it to the finish line.

"I wouldn't be able to accomplish this challenge alone," said Capt. Lauren Tchampl, 366th Fighter Wing Judge Advocate adverse actions chief. "Doing this as a team brought solidarity. I could feel my team pushing me to keep going."

Police Week was first proclaimed in 1962 by President John F. Kennedy.

"This seemed like a good cause," said Tchampl. "My husband puts up with all of my JA work, and him being a prior cop, this was my way of showing my support."

Participants were constantly on the move going from one exercise to another.

"The exercises were easy," said Johnson. "It was difficult to keep up the stamina to continue on. We were running from place to place."

To some, Police Week is more than merely a recognition week, it's a tribute and honor .

"With Memorial Day right around the corner, we are also honoring fallen Defenders," said Tchampl. "I am absolutely glad we did this."

This challenge wasn't about grueling physical labor, it was much more.

"It was a great opportunity to suffer and succeed together," said Johnson. "This is definitely something to be proud of. I would do this again. It was pretty amazing to come out and work with my team as well as show out Defenders our appreciation for all of their hard work."
