Full day kindergarten class pre-registration started May 21 at Mountain Home Air Force Base, Idaho.

The idea behind the program is to better prepare students for first grade at the Base Primary school.

"The pre-registration this year was unique in that parents had the option of registering their child for either the standard half-day kindergarten or the newly developed tuition-based full-day kindergarten," said Charles Jewell, 366th Force Support Squadron school liaison officer.

With the amount of students that signed up, this program will continue next year.

"We had our preliminary registration that started on the 21st of May," said Phil McCluskey, Base Primary school principle. "We were looking for a minimum of 20 students and a maximum of 25. During that pre-day registration time we had 23 sign up."

The tuition will go toward field trips and also provide an extra staff member in the classroom.

"Monthly tuition for the full-day option is $250 and space is limited to 25 students on a first come, first serve basis," said Jewell. "A deposit of $100 is required to secure an available slot."

McCluskey says this program is tailored to the growing size of the base.

"Idaho is one of the few states that doesn't require all-day kindergarten," said McCluskey. "We have a half-day kindergarten, which is what most schools in the state do."

Preparing students to advance to the next grade is the top priority.

"The hope is that parents will be satisfied with their children receiving full-day, curriculum-based instructions enabling their children to smoothly transition to first grade," said Jewell.

Providing a rich learning environment for those children is an alternative to standard child care.

"We are hoping to get kindergarteners more prepared for first grade," said McCluskey. "We are very excited to have this opportunity for the children and Mountain Home Air Force Base!"
