Having closed nearly two years ago, the newly revamped Gunfighter Theater is slated to open its doors again on base Nov. 8.

Movie buffs will be able to view new releases not yet on DVD at no cost. For the grand opening, the "Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles" will be the first movie played at 7 p.m.

"I remember when it was open in the past and I was disappointed to see it go," said Senior Airman Michael Knapp, 366th Component Maintenance Squadron aircraft fuel systems journeyman. "I'm excited to see what's new and what the theater has to offer. My wife and I are really looking forward to a free date night that's on base and free!"

Similar interest expressed by Airmen and their families prompted leadership to look into options for reopening the theater, which is managed by the 366th Force Support Squadron.

"It's been a joint effort between multiple squadrons on base," said Lt. Col. Diltrice Thomas, 366th FSS commander. "If we didn't have the combined effort of all these agencies, we wouldn't be opening the theater in roughly 30 days of starting the project."

The squadrons who helped to get the theater ready for viewers worked on multiple aspects of the building:  from the heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems, to a new digital projector and an improved sound system.

"We had to figure out a way to show movies," said Tommy Brooks, 366th FSS community services chief. "FSS purchased a license through the Navy Motion Picture Service, which will provide us movies every month. As a part of the purchasing agreement we can't charge an entry cost, making it free to everyone on base."

Of course as with any movie theater, there will be concessions for sale.

"FSS will be handling the concessions," said Thomas. "We're starting off with your standard concessions consisting of popcorn, candy and soda, but as the movie theater continues to generate revenue through concessions we'll introduce new items like nachos and pretzels."

The base will receive 16 to 32 movies a month consisting of older classics to new movies coming out of the theater. FSS will be able to keep these movies, which will build the base's library and provide numerous options to choose from in coming years.

Initially, the Gunfighter Theater will have four showings, two night movie options and two matinees. The evening showings will take place at 7 p.m. Friday and Saturday nights, and the matinees will be Saturdays and Sundays at 3 p.m. If the theater becomes packed and demand increases, FSS will expand show times and possibly days movies are offered.
