On June 1, five base personnel joined more than 1,000 competitors for the Ironman Boise 70.3 triathlon.

The field of 1,006 competitors featured 39 professional triathletes who finished the 1.2-mile swim in Lucky Peak Reservoir, biked 56 miles from the reservoir through South Boise to Downtown and ran 13.1 miles, mostly along Boise's Greenbelt.

The swim in the 60-degree water knocked 27 competitors out of the race before the cycling portion began, but not the Gunfighters.

"The swim was kind of scary because it was so cold," said Marni Steel, 366th Aeromedical Dental Squadron. "It was a challenge; I've done all the distances before, but never all three together."

"It was great to see the excitement permeate through the crowd and all of the athletes," said Capt. Erica Carroll, 366th Contracting Squadron Airman and one of the four Gunfighters who competed. "It was awesome just to see the determination and persistence in the mental and physical challenge this brought to every athlete."

Terenzo Bozzone, a 23-year-old from New Zealand, was the overall winner in 3 hours, 53 minutes and 28 seconds.

"It was a good course, and you always like winning," said Mr. Bozzone, who is an alternate on the New Zealand Olympic team.

Women's winner Kate Major, a 30-year-old Australian who trains in Solana Beach, Calif., led from start to finish and finished in 4 hours, 24 minutes and 44 seconds.

Base participants included:
Marni Steel, 366th Aeromedical Dental Squadron, who finished in 06:46:48
Capt. Erica Carroll, 366th Contracting Squadron, who finished in 06:50:22
Capt. Brian Carroll, 391st Fighter Squadron, who finished in 06:54:13
Nick Radocivitch, contractor, who finished in 07:57:31
