Underneath azure skies, more than 125 Gunfighters joined together at Silver Sage Golf Course May 30 to raise money for families in need through the Operation Warmheart Golf Tournament.

The event raised more than $1,800 while providing a day of entertainment for participants. All proceeds will directly benefit Gunfighters and their families.

"This is the biggest turnout we've had in the past five years," said Senior Master Sgt. Bobby Bankston, 366th Aircraft Maintenance Squadron first sergeant. "It's great to have Airmen come out and support this program."

The first sergeant's council and other committee members at Mountain Home Air Force Base make up Operation Warmheart. Its mission is to assist military families facing financially troubles through recommendations from supervisors to first sergeants. Operation Warmheart can immediately provide items such as food or diapers along with extra help during the holidays.

Operation Warmheart provides families in need with holiday meals for Thanksgiving and Christmas, in addition to the "Angel Tree" program, which ensures children receive Christmas gifts.

"We're taking care of our own," said Sergeant Bankston. "Those of us who run these programs need to ensure this gets passed from one generation to the next. If we take care of people down the line, they'll take care of folks who'll be in their place someday."

But it's not the only council who raises money, it's the local communities.

"The sole source of Operation Warmheart funding is accomplished through fundraisers held by the first sergeants, donations from squadrons and booster clubs, local community businesses sharing in our concern and the Combined Federal Campaign," said Master Sgt. Darryl Ross, 366th Medical Group first sergeant.
