More than 4,000 people made up of Mountain Home AFB personnel and local fans of the Idaho Stampede gathered together for the Air Power Night basketball game April 10 at Qwest Arena in Boise, Idaho.

The team supplied more than 400 free tickets for Gunfighters and their families to Friday night's game against the Bakersfield Jam, which they won 112-103.

Prior to tip-off, the team presented Col. John Bird II, 366th Fighter Wing commander, with a team shirt and basketball. While the singing stripes sang their rendition of the national anthem, the base honor guard team presented the colors.

The first quarter put the Stampede in the lead 28-18, but the Jam was able to close the gap by the end of the first half. With less than a minute left in the second quarter, the game was tied 51-51, and the Jam took the lead with two foul shots. The Stampede had the ball with only seconds to spare, and Lanny Smith secured the lead with a three-point shot from half court ending the half 54-53 in favor of the Stampede.

In the third quarter, the Stampede saw that lead slip away with the Jam pulling ahead with 89 points and the Stampede trailing by four. Early in the last quarter, the Stampede closed the gap and slowly started racking up points to secure the lead. The game ended with the Stampede taking the win 112-103.

"This was a great basketball game with 20 guys playing their hearts off," said Bryan Gates, Stampede head coach. "I thought our defensive effort for the last six minutes of the game was remarkable."

Throughout the game, which saw 14 lead changes, Stampede center Lance Allred scored the most baskets for the Stampede with 24 points.

The Idaho Stampede is a member of the National Basketball Association's development league or D-league. The league is made up of "farm" teams that are affiliated with one or more NBA teams.
