Open Season at the Mountain Home BX

Outdoor enthusiasts have a new option when gearing up for the hunt as the Army & Air Force Exchange Service cuts the ribbon on a counter dedicated exclusively to firearms and ammunition. While the BX is focused on saving Military Members time and money when shopping for rifles, holsters and other gun accessories, this new assortment does require a rigid attention to safety not seen in most areas of the exchange.

"The background and setup requirements undertaken to offer this merchandise has been extensive," said General Manager Robert Cooper. "We followed a controlled timeline with check offs that had to be completed to bring these products onto the installation."

After gaining Command, Fire Marshal and Security Officer approval, the BX had to obtain a Federal Firearms License, secure an electronically monitored gun safe, construct a control counter, install trigger locks on all guns and train personnel.

The timeline does not end once the ribbon is cut. In fact, ongoing measures at the counter will include informing shoppers of federal, state and Base regulations that must be complied with, recording sales transactions and conducting instant background checks.

"While we are focused on saving authorized shoppers money and time, our number one goal is safety," said Cooper "As such, we will be working closely with federal and installation authorities as we refine our security procedures."

The Mountain Home gun counter officially opened Saturday, May 22, with a Grand Opening Celebration set for June 10-11. Hunting and sporting aficionados are invited to come by and see what the PX has in store for them.

"This new service is just one of many efforts to deliver a complete exchange benefit to this community," said Cooper. "It is a clear illustration that no matter what the interest is, our team is dedicated to delivering outstanding value in an effort to make the BX authorized shoppers' first choice."
