Soon maintainers will have shelters to protect them and their aircraft while working on the flightline.

On May 17, a contract for more than $4.2 million was awarded to EDL Construction, Inc. to build 54 aircraft shelters and will take an estimated three to four months from the beginning of installation.

Construction of the shelters will begin shortly after Air Combat Command approval of the proposed aircraft parking plan to move planes closer together and parked nose to nose.

"The new parking plan will allow aircraft maintainers and their supervisors to be more efficient in the way that they work," said Chief Master Sgt Thomas Parkinson, Aircraft Maintenance Squadron Superintendent. "With the current plan it is difficult for workers to see what is happening on the flightline."

Along with the ability to be more efficient in the way maintainers work; the new plan will also provide more ramp space.

"It's going to double it," said Chief Parkinson. "It is going to go from where we are now to being able to put twice as many aircraft out on the ramp."

The shelters will provide cover for maintainers who put their time and effort into making sure aircraft take off without any problems. The entire project is a direct result of feedback Airmen gave after finding it was easier and cooler to work under shelters on their deployments.

"It's going to provide a better work environment than the folks have out there now," he said. "It will make them more efficient, protecting them and the aircraft from the elements."

The shelters are currently being constructed off-site and construction will begin once final parking plan is approved.
