Rabies is a viral disease transmitted to humans through a bite or scratch of an infected animal.

Bats are the most common carriers of rabies in Idaho. Raccoons, skunks, foxes and coyotes are other carriers of rabies.

If you are bitten or scratched by an animal, clean the wound immediately with soap and water. Next, notify your doctor of the incident and let them know as much information about the animal as possible to determine if a rabies vaccination will be needed. Modern day prophylaxis has proven to be almost 100 percent successful. However, human fatalities can occur from rabies if prompt medical attention is not sought. Early symptoms of rabies may include general weakness, discomfort, fever or headache. Later symptoms may include insomnia, hallucinations, paralysis, hydrophobia (fear of water) and death.

To help prevent rabies:
· Do not touch or handle wild animals.
· Make sure your pets receive the proper immunizations.
· Maintain control of your pets to reduce their exposure to wildlife.
· Report any ill domestic animals to the Veterinarian at (208) 828-2221.
· Report any ill wild animals to the Entomology Office at (208) 828-6300.
