A recent Department of Defense directive that changes the way visitors are granted access to military installations will take effect here on Oct. 11th. Whether you are active, reserve, guard, retired, or a civilian government employee or contractor, your guests will be required to undergo a more rigorous vetting process before they are allowed escorted or unescorted access on base.

"Escorted visitors must be physically escorted by an authorized sponsor at all times while on the installation," said Master Sergeant Jeff Gates of the 366th Security Forces Squadron. "ACC has defined escorted as within reasonable control, i.e., traveling in the same vehicle, staying in the same quarters, together in the same facility."

Sergeant Gates said if personnel requiring escort are found unattended, it is a direct violation of Article 92 UCMJ by the sponsor and the unattended visitor may be prosecuted for trespassing on a federal instillation.

"This new policy also authorizes the 'Trusted Traveler' procedure allowing uniformed service members, government employees, military retirees and adult dependents to vouch for passengers in their vehicle with the understanding that they must conform and abide by the escorted visitor procedures," he said.
"For added safety, the trusted traveler clause will not apply between the hours between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m. as 100% ID checks are in effect for that time period."

Unescorted visitors will be required to undergo a background check prior to being granted access to the base. According to MSgt Gates, an example of a visitor who would be considered unescorted is "...a visiting family member staying at the sponsors' on base residence while the sponsor is at work."

Even though background checks are not expected to take more than a few minutes each, Sergeant Gates recommends members aware of an upcoming visit contact the 366th Security Forces Visitor Control Center at 828-6022 in order to initiate advanced vetting which will save time when the visitor does arrive.
