Are you tough enough?

Firefighters from the 366th Civil Engineer Squadron held their annual Fire Muster Challenge Oct. 8 at Fire Station 1 near the flightline.

The challenge is a long-standing tradition that gives Airmen outside the fire department a chance to experience what the firefighters go through on a routine job site.

"Fire Muster is a culmination of Fire Prevention Week," said Lt. Col. Michael Holliday, 366th Civil Engineer Squadron commander. "It's a chance for people to get out and see what the firefighters do. We train this way, and if there was a fire event going on, my firefighters would be out there doing these kinds of events."

On average, about 10 to12 teams participate in this five event challenge. These events include rolling a 1 3/4-inch 50 foot hose, pulling a five-inch hose 100 feet, hitting a 100-pound Keiser sled with a 10-pound sledge hammer, pulling a 185-pound dummy 50 feet, and pulling a fully charged 200-foot hose about 150 feet.

"The biggest mental challenge is just trying to overcome all the pain in your body as you're trying to accomplish each task," said Staff Sgt. Jessica Meyer, 366th Medical Operations Squadron noncommissioned officer-in-charge of the mental health clinic.

The teams of five went head-to-head against each other in each of the five events. Each team member went through the course individually, the times were added together and the team with the lowest overall time moved on to the next round. The team left standing competed against the Fire Department for the title.

At the end of the three-hour long competition, the 389th Aircraft Maintenance Unit beat the Fire Department for the title and claimed bragging rights of the Fire Muster Challenge champion.

"We just appreciate the base's support and the opportunity we have to serve them as being the firefighters on this installation," Colonel Holliday said. "We have one of the best fire departments across the Air Force and I am proud of what my firefighters do to protect the mission."
