The 366th Logistics Readiness Squadron routed the 366th Civil Engineer Squadron in what started out as a close scoring intramural basketball championship game Feb. 28 at the fitness center.

After a come-from-behind victory against the 366th Medical Group, CES proved to be incapable of handling LRS' tight defense and quick offense as LRS won, 58-44.

The two teams traded shots throughout the first half, as neither team could figure out how to shut out the other. The inability to pull ahead left LRS with a slim four-point lead at halftime, leading 25-21.

LRS knew they had to hustle if they wanted to grab their fourth consecutive championship. Carlton Presley helped his team to the title with key steals and great assists.

"We tightened up our defense," said Presley. "We realized we couldn't let them run the floor like they were the first half. We had a lot of players who just stepped up when it meant the most."

For two minutes in the second half, the two teams were still unable to pull away, but with key plays from players such as Presley, David Drake, Alex Campbell and Kyle Vanlaningham, LRS was able to outscore CES 33-23.

"We knew this wasn't going to be an easy game to win," said Campbell. "We couldn't let up on them at all. The whole team did a great job. You couldn't ask for a much better performance."

Many key plays for LRS came in the closing five minutes of the game when the team drained three 3-point buckets in a row. CES tried to keep it a close game by fouling LRS players to stop the clock and make them earn their points at the free-throw line. However, this strategy worked against them as LRS made all but three foul shots to put CES into a deficit they could not recover from.

Maj. Jamaal Mays, 366th LRS commander, was very proud of his team's performance.

"I am so proud of their effort," he said. "They played very well together and were always confident. They played really smart basketball. If an opponent ever ran off a few unanswered points or if the team ever fell behind, they always remained calm and worked their way back to a victory."

LRS' Drake led all scorers with 25 points. Campbell followed behind with 15 and Vanlaningham scored 10. Jeff Braaten led all CES scorers with 18 points while Marcus Parker scored eight and Nick Nossbaum had six.

LRS came out of the winner's bracket with a regular season record of 11-2, while CES fought through the loser's bracket with a regular season record of 9-3.
