Fifteen members from Mountain Home Air Force Base turned out along with thousands of other participants Saturday for the 13th annual Susan G. Komen Boise Race for the Cure.

The Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure series raises funds and awareness for the fight against breast cancer, celebrates breast cancer survivorship and honors those who have lost their battle with the disease.

"The reason I started the Cardio Girls/Spinning Girls Team for the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure was to participate in this fantastic event in honor of my cousin, who died of breast cancer when she was 32 years old," said Gloria Valdez, MHAFB Housing Management Assistant. "Also, I have many friends and co-workers who have been affected by cancer in their own lives and that just makes finding a cure even more personal to me."

According to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure website, almost 20 million people each year are affected personally by a form of cancer, be it themselves or a family member or friend. At least 7 million people die of cancer each year and approximately 11 million new cases are diagnosed. That's more than AIDS, tuberculosis and malaria combined.

"So many people are affected by this terrible disease each year," said Staff Sgt. Tobi R. Wilson, a Non-destructive Inspection Craftsman from the 366th Equipment Maintenance Squadron, and also a CG/SG team member. "I participated last year also because I have many friends and co-workers who have been affected by cancer, and the Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure is such a fantastic event for helping support survivors who battled this disease."

Members of the CG/SG team participated in the 5K run and others in the 1K walk. Some even participated in both races according to Valdez.

Events like the Komen Boise Race for the Cure help raise much needed research and program money for the local community, according to the Komen website. The Boise affiliate has invested nearly $3.5 million into community breast cancer programs in 19 southwest Idaho counties. 75 percent of the earnings go back into the community while 25 percent goes toward research grants.

"Last year we raised $3,000 for this event and we hope to raise the same amount this year," said Valdez." So far we have raised $500 but we encourage people to donate all year long."

To donate, simply go to the Susan G. Komen Boise website at www.komenboise.org and click on the donate tab. Then, type in "Gloria Valdez" and complete the steps. She can also be contacted directly at (208) 590-9161 or go to the Housing Office to drop off a donation.
