Golf Creations of Marengo, Ill., recently finished renovations on the Silver Sage golf course, and the first round on the new United States Golf Association standard course was played June 15.

The new course now features 18 holes stretched out across 125-acres with USGA standard bunkers and greens, newly renovated practice greens and 12 new tee boxes.

"Approximately 12 years ago, the old facility manager put us on a list to have the greens and bunkers replaced to the USGA standard," said Stephen Vedder, Silver Sage golf course manager. "The construction was a difficult process, but now having a course widely recognized for its USGA stamp lends us validity to possibly bring more golfers through our doors."

Golfers were able to continue playing since the course was renovated in two phases.

"By utilizing two phases of construction we were able to continue providing excellent service to our customers," said Vedder. "Taking care of Gunfighters is the golf course's primary mission.

"We provide an opportunity for active-duty Airmen, dependents, DOD civilians and retirees to enjoy themselves on base and get some physical training in at the same time," he continued.

With the upgrades now complete, golfers of every experience level have the opportunity to get out and enjoy themselves.

"The renovation has turned our golf course into a championship-quality course" said Col. Bruce Smith, 366th Fighter Wing vice-commander. "It is not just another Air Force base course. The course is extremely challenging, and people will have a desire to play."

Silver Sage hosts approximately 240 rounds a week, more than 35 tournaments a year and multiple special events.

"When distinguished visitors come to the base, who happen to be avid golfers, and we blow their socks off with our USGA greens and high quality course, it positively affects our reputation throughout the Air Force," said Vedder. "For most of our customers, almost every aspect of the course has changed or been upgraded. Plus, our profits go right back to helping Gunfighters which really is a win-win situation for everyone.

"Silver Sage golf course is striving to continue taking care of the best customers in the world, Gunfighters," he continued. "For those who love golf or for those with no experience, come try out the new course!"
