Sesame Street comes to MHAFB July 16

MOUNTAIN HOME AIR FORCE BASE, Idaho --  Thanks to the Untied Service Organization, characters from the popular children's series Sesame Street will conduct live performances for MHAFB youth at the base fitness center on July 16 and 17.

There will be a total of three 45 minute acts, two on July 16 at 3 p.m. and another at 6:30 p.m. and lastly on July 17 at 6:30 p.m. that are free for military families and their children.

According to www.uso.org/sesame, "since its debut in July 2008, the Sesame Street/USO Experience for Military Families has taken its message to more than 248,000 troops and military families and performed 433 shows on 131 military bases in 33 states and eleven countries."

The performances will feature notable characters such as Elmo, Grover, Cookie Monster, Rosita and Katie, a new character conceived specifically for the tour to assist children of military families deal with the challenges of relocation.

"I think any program like this is extremely beneficial to the children," said Diana Lawson, director of youth programs for the 366th Force Support Squadron. "Strong resiliency isn't only important for adults. The children are also extremely attuned to the extra stress of having a loved one deployed."

The program also will provide multiple volunteer opportunities to include helping with set-up, tear-down and security. For numerous Gunfighters, this is a chance to not only help out but advance their career development as well.

"We encourage people to volunteer for this because we couldn't host this kind of wonderful program without their assistance," said Lawson.
