The school year has come to an end and base agencies are working to keep young Gunfighters entertained during the summer months.

One way for children to get involved in summer activities is through the Youth Center.

"We have quite a bit of activities planned every day," said Henry Ross, youth center adolescent teen program coordinator. "There are field trips, open pool and video game recreation time, as well as camps coming up throughout summer. The cost will vary from no charge to a modest fee of two, three or four dollars per person, per activity."

During June, rainbow discovery and the clubhouse rooms will have the opportunity to visit the Boise zoo, the old penitentiary, go swimming, bowl, and even stop by Settlers Park in Meridian.

"We are expanding our open recreation program by offering the youth an opportunity to go downtown and use the municipal pool," said Ross "We also just started a program called young athletes which is for ages two through five which helps develop their coordination and motor skills."

But don't worry; the Youth Center is not only for younger children, the organization hosts activities for teens up to 18 years-old.

"We have the Y.E.S. program which means Youth Employment Skills," said Ross. "It's an opportunity for teens to earn a $1,000 scholarship by volunteering through the Air Force Aid Society."

Teens in grades 9-12 qualify for the program by volunteering 250 hours throughout all four years of high school.

"We have grants for these programs to help Gunfighter families do the activities together," said Ross. "In May, we hosted a family fishing event and have another activity coming up where we will rent out the downtown pool allowing families to float for less than five bucks."

Getting involved with the Youth Center allows children to gain new experiences and make new friends along the way.

"When you're having fun with your friends, you make new friends," said Tamiya Bruce, who attends the youth center. "I tell my friends who aren't a part of Youth Center that they haven't experienced fun until you've been, so let's go!"

Family skate night will be held Thursday, July 11. This will be free for parents and range from two to four dollars for children.
