366th Fighter Wing welcomes new commander

MOUNTAIN HOME AIR FORCE BASE, Idaho --  The 366th Fighter Wing gathered to welcome the new commander during a change of command ceremony, September 8, 2017, at Mountain Home Air Force Base, Idaho.

Col. Joseph D. Kunkel assumed command from Col. Jefferson J. O’Donnell, while Lt. Gen. Mark D. Kelly, 12th Air Force (Air Forces Southern) commander, officiated the ceremony.

"It has been my humble honor to serve as the 366th Gunfighter One,” O’Donnell said. "Uncertainty is our greatest threat, but Gunfighters will continue to succeed, because fortune favors the bold!"

Under his leadership two squadrons executed record setting deployments in support of Operation Inherent Resolve.

Kunkel is now responsible for the wing comprised of 4,200 military and civilian members, including a Republic of Singapore Air Force squadron.
He was previously the 325th Fighter Wing vice commander at Tyndall Air Force Base, Florida, and has over 2,200 flight hours in four different aircraft, including the F-15E Strike Eagle.

Kunkel expressed his appreciation to continue the Gunfighter’s proud heritage built on innovation which is required in today’s uncertain environment.

“Jenny and I are extremely happy and proud to join the team, and it is my absolute honor to serve as Gunfighter One. We have felt very welcomed into the community,” Kunkel said. “I’m known for warfighting excellence and taking care of airmen and that is what I am going to bring to the Mountain Home team.”
