Emily Stephens, MHAFB Youth Center volunteer, was named the Idaho State Military Youth of the Year. She received the annual award for outstanding leadership, character and youth services performed in the local community.

Being named Youth of the Year is the highest honor a Boys & Girls Club member can receive. Participants are chosen from their local clubs and compete at state and regional levels.

Stephens dedicated more than 200 hours to several organizations in the local community, to include the MHAFB youth programs. Her performance was instrumental in obtaining grants for programs as was her help in planning club programs and functions.

"Emily was recognized for her incredible efforts in giving back to the community, school and the program itself," said Chartelle Eichman, MHAFB youth program director. "I hope my daughter is like her one day, with the same drive and a love for life. It's been a real privilege working with her."

Stephens admits her motivation comes from within.

"Recently I was given the advice that when volunteering you should always be authentic. Find something you are passionate about and you'll succeed," said Stephens.
Earning the Military Youth of the Year honor, means club youth serving on military installations must advance through local, state and regional competitions. Demonstrating how they have achieved academic success, outstanding contributions to their family, school, community and BGCA-affiliated youth center, while overcoming personal obstacles.

"Volunteering gives me a positive outlook on life, it makes me happier," said Stephens. "Working with children is one of my passions, because I want to be an elementary school teacher eventually. Helping others is something I want to do, it's a passion for my future career and of course I'm pleased to help out."

Stephens will compete for the 2014 Military Youth of the Year, and continues to inspire those around her.
