Simple steps to prevent viral infections Published Sept. 12, 2014 By Airman 1st Class Jessica H. Smith 366th Fighter Wing Public Affairs MOUNTAIN HOME AIR FORCE BASE, Idaho -- Recently, several cases of the Enterovirus D68 have been reported across the United States. The EV-D68 is a non-polio enterovirus first identified in California in 1962. "The virus can be prevented from becoming anything serious if dealt with when symptoms first occur," said Staff Sgt. Justin Gray, with the 366th Aerospace Medical Squadron, NCO in charge of community health. "As of now the closest confirmed state is Colorado." No cases of the virus have been reported near Mountain Home Air Force Base. Ten states have contacted the Center for Disease Control and Prevention for help with the illness. The symptoms of EV-D68 can vary from mild ones similar to those of a common cold to more severe symptoms such as infection in the heart or brain, as well as possible paralyzation. The severe symptoms are less likely to occur but can. Although there are no telltale signs setting symptoms apart from those of a common cold, Gray said, "The only real sign is the symptoms progress exponentially faster than that of a regular common cold and can end up being much more severe." There are ways to help prevent infection such as frequently washing hands, avoiding direct contact with those who are sick, and frequently disinfecting surfaces and objects. "Keeping on top of personal hygiene will help combat the virus," said Gray. "There is a need to educate people about the virus so they are getting information from a reputable source," said Gray. "Knowing allĀ the facts and information about the illness from a credible source will hopefully aid in not contracting the virus."
