Vehicle Wind Damage

Southwestern Idaho is subject to sudden weather changes. This includes periods of high winds, which can cause costly damages to vehicles and equipment.

Most cases of vehicular wind damages are preventable when the proper precautions are taken.

The most common form of vehicular wind damage occurs when the occupants attempt to open the doors during periods of high winds.  If the door is not restrained properly the wind will catch the door, forcing it out of the occupant's hand.  When this occurs, the hinge is pushed beyond its normal limit and the damage often requires repair or replacement.

The following measures are suggested to eliminate wind damage.  First, anyone who drives a car should pay particular attention to current and upcoming weather conditions.  Second, always try to park into the wind, roll the window down, and hold on tightly to the door handle and frame when exiting the vehicle.  Third, be aware of your surroundings when performing your duties.

Be mindful of objects that can cause damage to vehicles as well as injury to personnel. If possible, park in a protected area and secure all loose tools and materials.

In 2014 there were 11 incidents of wind damage totaling more than $6,000. On top of that, the loss of the vehicle can hamper the wing's mission, taking time from the affected unit which must report the incident and turn in the damaged asset.

Using a little care and common sense while performing your daily mission requirements will go a long way to ensure the continued protection of our vehicle fleet.
