National Children's Dental Health Month Published Feb. 16, 2016 By Staff Reports 366th Dental Squadron MOUNTAIN HOME AIR FORCE BASE, Idaho -- The American Dental Association has designated the month of February as National Children's Dental Health Month - NCDHM. This year marks the 75th anniversary of NCDHM. To commemorate this milestone, efforts will be made to educate children, parents and teachers on the importance of good oral health. The theme for this year is "Sugar Wars", emphasizing the fact that good nutrition is a key component to oral health. What we put into our bodies is just as critical as flossing and brushing twice daily. Sugar intake for children - and everyone - should be limited. The American diet tends to include large amounts of soda and juice, both known to be leading causes of cavities. In addition to eating right, it's important to schedule routine dental check-ups for children. Don't wait for an emergency to happen! A child's first dental visit should occur when the first tooth comes into the mouth, or at the first year of age; whichever comes first. It's important the initial visit is a positive experience for both the child and their parents. The appointment should familiarize the child with the dental examination and cleaning procedure while establishing a positive relationship with the dentist and their staff. Because military family members are seen off-base for dental care, it's the responsibility of all active duty military members to ensure their dependents are enrolled in the Tricare Dental Plan. If you have any questions about enrollment, call Tricare/MetLife at 1-855-638-8371. If you have any questions regarding oral health, contact the Mountain Home Air Force Base Dental Clinic at 208-828-7300
