After one of the base's softball fields was declared unsafe for softball due to dirt and field conditions, it seemed like there was no use for it; but Lt. Col. Timothy S. Wood, 366th Civil Engineer Squadron commander, had other ideas.

"When I found out we had an abandoned field here, I thought it would be easy to convert," he said.

Located on Desert Street across from the Chapel Annex, the field, once used by Gunfighter athletes, would now be offered to their pets in the form of a new dog park.

"The park was built to provide dog owners who live on base a place they can let their dogs off the leash to run," said Maj. Karlo Jajlilardo, 366th CES operations flight commander.

As pet owners are prohibited from allowing animals to run loose on the softball or soccer fields per base regulations, the new dog park is the perfect place to play, he said.

After a bit of work by the 366th CES Operation Flight and funds provided by the base, the park was completed at the end of November.

"The only required work was some fence modification, placing sod on the old infield and installing a sprinkler system for the new grass," said Major Jajlilardo.

The only thing asked of people who use the new park is that they clean up after their pets, said Colonel Wood. A waster dispenser station near the entrance is available for patron's use.

Rules for the park are as follows:
· Users must control their animals at all times, both on and off a leash
· If animals show aggression toward other animals or people, they may be restricted from the park
· Animals must be accompanied by an adult 18 years or older with no more than two dogs per person
· People must clean up after their animals and remove any waste. Failure to comply may result in restriction from the park
