Editor's note: This is the first installment in a series of fitness articles that will run throughout the month of May in conjunction with Air Force Fitness Month.

As the weather warms up, many Airmen increase their fitness regime.

In order to help Airmen stay fit, the Gunfighter Fitness Center staff caters to a wide range of interests, offering everything from free weights and cardio equipment, fitness classes and intramural sports.

"The Gunfighter Fitness Center holds a five-star rating by the Air Force Services Agency," said Rick Holmes, fitness center director. "The five-star program acknowledges Air Force fitness centers that have reached the highest standard of achievement in all five aspects of program management including programs, facilities, training, operations and customer service."

The free fitness center classes held throughout the week include spin classes, circuit training, power yoga, interval training, turbo kick and many more for every fitness level. Classes are on a first-come, first-served basis.

The fitness center also offers four intramural sports: softball, basketball, flag football and volleyball. To sign up for these sports, contact a unit sports representative. If a unit is too small or does not have an active sports program, unit members can contact the fitness center to be put on the player's pool list.

For those who are more interested in a self-paced workout, the gym has weight, resistance training, large and small group exercise room and cardio rooms. Each piece of cardio equipment in the cardio room is equipped with a 15-inch television monitor, cable television and a DVD and CD player. Workout equipment, such as wrist straps or a weight belt, can be signed out at the front desk.

Outdoor recreational facilities include basketball courts located near the dormitories, two softball fields, new asphalt running track, football and soccer field, a multi-purpose field and four tennis courts.

In addition to the numerous outdoor facilities, the fitness center also offers an indoor track and volleyball court in the Fit to Fight Annex.

"The Gunfighter Fitness Center is a great facility with an impressive variety of equipment and activities," said Senior Airman Monique Brown, 366th Services Squadron fitness supervisor and certified personal trainer.

The fitness center is open 4:30 a.m. to 11 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on weekends and holidays. Fitness center patrons under the age of 16 must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.
