Special leave accrual available for deployed, nondeployed members in ‘use or lose’ status

  • Published
Gunfighters recalled from or unable to take annual leave this past year for reasons like contingency operations support may qualify to accumulate more than 75 days of leave at the end of the fiscal year.

Special leave accrual, or SLA, applies when deployments or assignments to designated operational missions at the national level prohibit members from using leave.

Members qualify for SLA if one of the following circumstances prohibited normal leave use:

* Deployment to an operational mission at the national level for a continuous period of at least 60 days
* Assignment or deployment for a continuous period of at least 60 days to unit, headquarters and supporting staffs when their involvement supporting a designated operational mission at the national level prohibits them from taking leave
* Deployment for at least 60 and up to 120 consecutive days to a designated hostile-fire or imminent-danger pay area
* Deployment to a hostile-fire or imminent-danger pay area for 120 or more consecutive days and receive this entitlement for four or more consecutive months

Note: Members are ineligible for special leave accrual consideration if they returned from their deployment and had the opportunity to use leave didn't. Post-deployment recovery time is not a valid reason for reinstatement of lost leave when numbers could use accrued leave instead.

The application and instructions for SLA are available on the AFPC website. All applications must be forwarded to the wing commander for approval and must reach AFPC by Nov. 30. After Nov. 30, the base leave program manager submits all requests through the case management system. For more information on SLA, call the base military personnel flight at 828-2133.
