Gunfighters continue Hammond’s Baby Bundles tradition Published Dec. 2, 2008 By Airman 1st Class Renishia Richardson 366th Fighter Wing Public Affairs Office MOUNTAIN HOME AIR FORCE BASE, Idaho -- Kim Kish, manager of the Gunfighter Attic, and other volunteers assembled quilts, hats and cards into individual bundles at the Attic Nov. 22 to donate to families with newborn babies at the 366th Medical Group Family Care Unit in appreciation of Hammond Quilt Day. Hammond Quilt Day, led by Ms. Kish and Tammy Skaleski, began in 2004 to honor the memory of Airman 1st Class Walter James Hammond IV, who was a volunteer at the Gunfighter Attic. Airman Hammond enlisted in the Air Force on March 12, 2002, and arrived at Mountain Home Air Force base Nov. 11, 2002. On Feb. 6, 2004, Airman Hammond was involved in a fatal accident, and the quilting day honors his love for volunteering and dedication to the Gunfighter Attic. As of May 19, 2004, approximately 948 bundles have been delivered to newborns here. Clothing, stuffed animals and books are some of items that are donated and incorporated into the bundles. "We hold quilting days as often as we can for anyone who wants to quilt or learn how," said Ms. Kish. "We also try to have pre-cut fabric on hand and quilting kits for anyone who would like to sew at home."
