Notice of availability of proposed plan for cleanup decision for Site FT-08 Published Aug. 18, 2009 MOUNTAIN HOME AIR FORCE BASE, Idaho -- The U.S. Air Force recently completed the cleanup decision process for site FT-08, Former Fire Training Area No. 8, under the Comprehensive Environmental Response Compensation and Liability Act at Mountain Home Air Force Base, Idaho The U.S. Air Force in cooperation with the Environmental Protection Agency Region 10 and the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality have prepared the details of this decision process in a document called the Proposed Plan. The Proposed Plan provides a description of the site, site background, and the justification for the cleanup decision at the site. The decision presented in the Proposed Plan is to proceed with implementing a soil cleanup process called soil vapor extraction, or SVE. This process physically removes solvent- and petroleum-related volatile chemicals from contaminated soil by creating a vacuum which results in air movement through the soil. This movement of air through the soils then removes the contamination as a vapor, which is then discharged to the atmosphere. The small quantity of contamination at this site and the contaminant mass that will be discharged to the atmosphere is not anticipated to impact the air quality at the base above regulatory or human health based levels. The Proposed Plan document is available for public review and comment at the following: www.mountainhome.af.mil/shared/media/document/AFD-090807-034.pdf The public comment period for this Proposed Plan is open from Aug. 18 through Sept.16. There will also be a public meeting in Mountain Home, Idaho, Sept. 9. The Proposed Plan provides more detail concerning the public comment period and the public meeting. The public may also contact the Air Force as listed below to obtain additional information including locations where the document will be available in hard copy. 366th Fighter Wing Public Affairs Office 366 Gunfighter Ave., Suite 314 Mountain Home Air Force Base, Idaho 83648 (208) 828-6800 e-mail: 366wgpa@mountainhome.af.mil
