Gunfighters paused to remember Senior Airman Matthew R. Courtois during a funeral service held in Boise Sept. 28.

Airman Courtois, 366th Security Forces Squadron, 22, of Lucas, Texas, died Sept. 20 as a result of non-combat related injuries while on duty deployed in Southwest Asia. The circumstances surrounding the incident are under investigation.

Airman Courtois enlisted in the Air Force in 2006 and was assigned to Mountain Home Air Force Base after completing basic military training and technical school.

Throughout the funeral, many people talked about their memories of Airman Courtois with a special focus on his smile and sense of humor. Fellow 366th SFS members highlighted his love and dedication to the job.

"Matt was a get-it-done kind of person; he loved his work, and he showed it through his outstanding performance and achievements throughout his career," said Maj. Earl Layne, 366th SFS commander. "He was a shining example of what many people aspired to be. He gave selflessly to those around him and in doing so endeared himself to us all, and he was always there for us as friends."

Airman Courtois is survived by his wife, Cheyenne; stepdaughter, Shaundra; stepson, Kaden; father, Steve; mother, Sue; brother, John; and sisters Amy and Carrie.
