The base tax center is now open in Building 2607 to Department of Defense identification card holders who would like free assistance with filing their 2010 return.

The center is currently open to single filers through Feb. 4 and is scheduled to open to all filers Feb. 7. Hours of operation are from 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Mondays and Fridays for uncomplicated return walk-ins, Tuesdays for retiree walk-ins and Thursdays for complicated returns by appointment only. The office will be closed Wednesdays for administrative duties.
Additionally, several MHAFB units will have Volunteer Income Tax Assistance representatives who can e-file federal returns.

Capt. Bradley Mumford, 366th Fighter Wing Chief of Legal Assistance and Preventative Law, says there are several tools to help Airmen file their returns.

"Many companies offer free online tax filing services to military members," he said. "Many of these companies have step by step directions on how to easily file them."

Airmen who have never filed taxes before may find it easier to visit the tax center than trying to file online.

"I find it easier to talk to somebody rather than try to figure things out on my own," said Airman 1st Class Brandon Kilburg, 366th Equipment Maintenance Squadron Ammunitions Flight. "If you've never filed returns before, filing online may be a bit confusing. Here at the tax center the volunteers will walk you through step by step and explain to you how they are doing it."

When preparing to file a return, one must have their most recent W-2 form, a current 1099, military ID card and Social Security Card.
