The base tax center is now open in Bldg 2607 to all Department of Defense identification card holders who would like free assistance with filing their 2011 return.

Hours of operation are from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Mondays and Fridays for walk-in customers, Tuesdays and Thursdays for appointment only. The tax center will be closed Wednesdays for administrative duties.

Additionally, several MHAFB units will have volunteer income tax assistance representatives who can e-file federal returns.

According to Capt. Jerred Kelly, 366th Fighter Wing chief of legal assistance and preventative law, there are several tools to help Airmen file their returns.

"Many companies offer free online tax filing services to military members," he said. "Many of these companies have step-by-step directions on how to easily file them."

Airmen who have never filed taxes before may find it easier to visit the base tax center than trying to file online.

Capt. Kelly went on to say, "If you've never filed returns before, filing online may be a bit confusing. Here at the tax center the volunteers will walk you through step-by-step and explain to you how they are doing it."

When preparing to file a return, one must have the most recent W-2 form, a current 1099, DoD ID card, and Social Security card.
