Wing Sports Day - Hooah! Published May 29, 2012 By 2nd Lt. David Liapis 366th Fighter Wing Public Affairs MOUNTAIN HOME AIR FORCE BASE, Idaho -- More than 1,200 competitive and formation runners braved the near-freezing morning temperature May 24 while running a 5K race to start off the first wing sports day competition held here since 2009. The 366th Force Support Squadron hosted the all-day event that included the Memorial Day 5K run, trap shooting, volleyball, golf, basketball, bowling, softball, live music, prizes, giveaways and a free barbecue hosted by the Gunfighter Club staff. Twenty-two squadrons represented by more than 650 Gunfighters participated in the days' sports competitions. Hundreds more cheered on their fellow Airmen and shared burgers, stories and laughs at the post-competition barbeque and award ceremony. The bottom line was that it wouldn't have happened if the whole wing hadn't come together to support the events, said Lt. Col. Ken Dewlen, 366th Force Support Squadron commander. "It was the first sports day in three years at Mountain Home Air Force Base, and I'll bet you a dollar to a donut it was the best sports day ever. Hooah!" The 366th Fighter Wing Staff took first place in golf and volleyball, the 366th Component Maintenance Squadron was able to "pull" off the top spot in trap shooting, the 366th Medical Group knocked out the competition in bowling, the 366th Equipment Maintenance Squadron fielded first place in the softball tournament and the 726th Air Control Squadron jumped above the rest in basketball. Squadrons earned points toward the overall competition by winning events and by simply participating in the various sports. The 366th MDG tugged their way to victory over the 366th FWS during a tug-of-war competition used to break the tie for first place. Be on the lookout for future opportunities to compete with fellow Gunfighters soon. "It was an excellent event with a great turnout," said Col. Bruce Smith, 366th Fighter Wing vice commander. "We will definitely do it again this year."
