AFAF Helps MHAFB Airmen (Part 4 of 4) Published March 26, 2013 MOUNTAIN HOME AIR FORCE BASE, Idaho -- Below are three anonymous submissions dealing with how the AFAF has assisted Gunfighters in times of great need. I was on remote assignment in Korea and received emergency notification my mother-in-law was very ill with a terminal condition. I was approved for an emergency grant for airfare by the Air Force Aid Society and was able to make it home in a timely manner. My identity stolen in July 2012 and my bank account was wiped out. I went to the Airman and Family Readiness Center and applied for an Air Force Aid Society loan for $1,600 to cover my household expenses until the bank situation was resolved. The loan helped me pay my mortgage and associated utility bills. I entered the Air Force already married with a child. After arriving at my first duty station as an Airman Basic, I was told that I had to live off-base because on-base housing would not be available for another two years. I arrived early in the spring and all went well until our first winter. Unfortunately, our heating bill was a lot more than we had expected and we were short on funds. After speaking with my supervisor, he referred me to the (then) Family Support Center and after some counseling, I was approved for a grant through the Air Force Aid Society to pay my bills.
