The U.S. Air Force (USAF) is seeking public input on a Proposed Plan to address asbestos-containing material (ACM) at Environmental Restoration Program Site LF043, a 70-acre construction debris disposal site at Mountain Home Air Force Base in Elmore County, Idaho.
Dumping of construction debris and basalt rock began in 1953 and continued approximately through 2007. A fence was constructed around the Site in 2014, to restrict access. The Site contains exposed ACM, some of which is in poor condition (e.g., materials containing asbestos are broken into small pieces). The ACM is not currently friable, but the Air Force is planning to take action before the materials further deteriorate. The preferred alternative for Site LF043 is Alternative 4: Removal of Known ACM with Off-Site Disposal. Removal of surface and subsurface ACM debris along with Institutional Controls and Engineering Controls.
The public is invited to review and comment on the Proposed Plan, which presents a summary of investigations performed at the site and outlines cleanup alternatives. The proposed plan is available online at: https://ar.afcec-cloud.af.mil/ (Click on “Continue to site”, then select “Mountain Home AFB, ID” as the Installation and “LF043” as the Site, then click on “Search” to view the list of relevant documents.)
The USAF will host poster sessions at three public meetings to discuss the Proposed Plan. Oral and written comments received during the public comment period will be thoroughly evaluated and considered before selecting a final cleanup alternative.
