MOUNTAIN HOME AIR FORCE BASE, Idaho -- What are the Tri-care choices for a college student who turns 23? What about for 21-year-olds who lose eligibility due to age? For young adults in this situation, there is a new option for Tri-care coverage.
TRICARE Young Adult is medical and pharmacy coverage for eligible enrollee's. Enrollee's must have a Tri-care-eligible sponsor, be unmarried, under 26 years of age and not eligible for personal employer-sponsored healthcare coverage.
The TYA monthly premium is $186, and to determine eligibility, coverage, cost, and enrollment information visit www.triwest.com/TYA.
TYA currently provides the same coverage as TRICARE Standard. The sponsor's status will determine the catastrophic cap, deductible and cost shares. Dental coverage, however, is not included.
A payment covering the first three monthly premiums totaling $558 is required with the initial enrollment. Automatic monthly payments of $186 by credit/debit card or electronic fund transfer are required.
Premiums may not be paid via sponsor's allotment. TYA premiums cannot be combined or paid with the sponsor's other Tri-care premium or fee. Bill payments set up and made through a bank will not be accepted. There are four simple steps for enrollment.
First, download and fill out the TYA Application available at www.triwest.com/TYA.
Second, choose one of three options for a coverage start date, either the first day of the next month, the first day of a month up to 90 days in the future, or a date in the past for retroactive or continuous coverage purposes.
Third, submit the enrollment form with premium payment to TriWest before May 31, and you can request a May 1 or June 1 start date for coverage. Beginning June 1, enrollment forms must be submitted with the application and payment by the last day of the month before coverage starts. Or, the enrollment forms can be submitted with the application and payment by the first date of a month up to 90 days in the future.
Last, print the application making sure the young adult enrollee signs and dates the application. Then submit the signed application along with premium payment to TriWest.
Applications can be faxed to 1-866-259-0419 or mailed to TriWest Healthcare Alliance, PO Box 43315, Phoenix, AZ 85080-3315, or submitted at any Tri-care Service Center.
Coverage retroactive to January 1, 2011, or the first date of eligibility if after this date, is available during initial enrollment.
When purchasing retroactive coverage, you will have to pay the monthly premiums dating back to the start of your retroactive coverage, in addition to the initial three-month premium payment. Retroactive coverage will not be available for enrollments after September 30, 2011.
In October 2011, a TYA Prime option will be available to qualified enrollee's. Enrollment into this option will also require a monthly premium.
