Medical Group simulates wartime scenarios

It looks like an episode of M.A.S.H. as the door of the tent flies open and in comes a guy with his arm in a makeshift sling. Flanked by two people with red crosses on their sleeves, he walks in looking woozy. They sit him down by one of more than a dozen stretchers and begin to check his vitals. He sustained a serious injury to his forearm so his arm is splinted and placed in a proper sling. Soon, the morphine he is given kicks in and he gives a thumbs-up when the doctor asks if he's feeling better.

Wartime scenarios such as this one are commonplace for the men and women of the 366th Medical Group. These scenarios will be simulated during the Phase II portion of Exercise Sharpshooter 08-01 from Oct. 24 to 26.

"Our primary mission during this exercise is to provide immediate stability of all injuries, return the individual to duty and provide higher echelon care if necessary," said Lt. Col. David Cockrum, 366th MDG.

Other missions of the medical personnel during the exercise are preventative in nature. These include water testing to ensure quality drinking water for the base and risk assessment to prepare work areas by making sure there are no unnecessary risks involved in the process or the setting.

Phase II of Exercise Sharpshooter 08-01 is being conducted to prepare personnel for combat situations and for the upcoming March 2008 operational readiness inspection.
