11/4/2011 - MOUNTAIN HOME AIR FORCE BASE, Idaho -- The U.S. Air Force recently completed the third Five-Year Review of the Comprehensive Environmental Response Compensation and Liability Act Remedy for 33 sites at Mountain Home Air Force Base, Idaho.

The Air Force in concurrence with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the Idaho Department of Environmental Quality produced a report documenting the results of the review, status of the sites and recommendations for future activities.

In 1995, the No Action remedy was selected for 32 sites. A limited action remedy was selected for the remaining site, ST-11. The first Five-Year Review of these remedies showed groundwater monitoring data throughout the first 5-year period to be inconsistent with model predictions that led to the 1995 remedy selection and for some sites land use controls were recommended. Follow-on work conducted in the second 5-year period furthered the work completed during initial site investigations and suggested a clear path to answering clean up questions that remain and eventual permanent closure of most sites.

Additional work completed in the third 5-year period included selection of amended remedies for two sites, FT-08 and ST-11 and clean up action for other sites resulting in site closure. This review finds 27 sites are protective under the current remedy; land use restrictions are in place and provide protectiveness for three sites; one site was closed and is subject to solid waste laws; one site was closed based on Risk-Based Corrective Action standards; and the remedy for one site is protective in the short term but requires further action to be protective in the long term.

The next Five-Year Remedy Review will be completed no later than June 2016.

The Five-Year Remedy Review document is available for public review at the following website address: http://www.mountainhome.af.mil/library/environmentalnews/index.asp
